Let's talk all things food (one of our favourite topics) with Paul Hegley

Our executive head chef and the man behind the curating of our delicious menus

A fulfilling breakfast and cold juice to wake you up. A laidback lunch to keep you going. A delightful dinner with a cocktail or two to end the day. Our restaurant is the heart of Gara Rock. Whether you’re just popping in for a nourishing meal. Or staying to enjoy a night away too. We love sharing our delicious food with you.

Paul recently chatted to Boutique Hotelier magazine about what the past year has meant for our restaurant. And it’s not all bad! For Paul and his team, it’s been all about food waste strategies, whipping up new menu creations and redevelopment ideas ready for re-opening our doors and hosting our guests.

With all the challenges of booking cancellations, sudden closures, and not to mention the dreaded last minute government announcements… we like to look on the bright side! Paul and his team have been practising preserving and pickling food just in case we sadly have to pop the closed sign up again (we hope not). ‘Lockdown pickles’ will be a feature on our menus, you can count on that!

In the kitchen, we are keeping it simple (but bursting with flavour). We’re using local and seasonable produce to keep us consistent. And sticking to our roots. So, when you dine with us, you get a flavour of South Devon on your plate.

A focus for this year is keeping our kitchen sustainable. We love our environment and are always looking at things we can do to help in what little way we can. We’re pleased to say we have very little food waste, and we’re working with suppliers on plastic and food packaging too.

Hospitality, like many industries, has had a tough 12 months. But it hasn’t been without its rewards too, like taking time to get our creative caps on, welcoming our guests back and seeing them enjoy our food. We can’t wait to be open our restaurant doors again in May. We’re working with Ox Grills to put a spin on our spectacular outdoor area and incorporating food cooked over coals. We’re looking forward to unveiling this to you… the future is looking bright!

So, when you join us, sit back with a glass of bubbly. Enjoy the spectacular coastal views. If you’re outside on the terrace, soak up the sun. We won’t stop you!
